Chapter 42 - Mediation

I came back after work, later than I intended. I wanted SOME entertainment after working all day, but it snowballed to ten at night, leaving me very little time to check in on Lila and Kara. When I entered the space, Tarne was already by my side, seemingly in the same exact spot where she was before. I wondered if she stood there silently watching as her two moms worked it out. I inspected the cube beyond the library space without saying anything. The walls were still intact, but the bubbles inside were gone. They had special rules to only exist in conflict to distance the two women in a brawl. I had not seen Fyntn around, and I was glad he was not taking Kara’s side in the fight like before. “Oh, hey,” Tarne said, and walked after me into the cube. It only kept Lila and Kara from passing through. They were sitting in the corners of the cube, apart. “What did you do to them, anyway? They seem so calm all of a sudden. Kara is usually very high-strung. She only unwinds when they’re in be...

Chapter 8 - In Failure Is Learning

The next time I entered the library was on Monday morning at coffee. The place was empty, but Rebecca was sure to arrive when she felt that tingle. I’d been toying with an idea ever since the day before. While I couldn’t bring beast into her space, nothing stopped me from letting JJ run free. He’d have the same power as me in this space, but the freedom to express himself rather than suffocate at the back of my mind. I felt my mind drift off for a second. It demanded more caffeine after a short rest from Sunday. I’d have to pick that idea up later. I scribbled a message for Rebecca in the air and left. break I returned after work on that Monday to find Rebecca reading. She looked up for a moment and scanned for me, but I remained invisible. Before I made a form, I wanted to spy on the few in this space that I could. I found them at Eva’s place who returned to her routine as if Finnelgamin never existed, but when I appeared before them, the sight knocked her into a tangent of memory. ...

Chapter 2 - Reunion

When I returned the following day, Rebecca was sitting on the couch in her brand new living room, holding the ukulele in playing position, but making no sound. Before saying anything, I created myself a form and knocked at the entrance to the living room. In realization of my visit, Rebecca jumped up and nearly tackled me to the ground with a hug. I wasn’t sure where she got the idea that hugging was something to do when happy. It could have been my personality seeping through, but I avoided physical contact in real life. Maybe I created my form too real for her, and the comfort of warmth and skin contact was obvious to her. “Hi, Rebecca,” I said. “I’m sorry I’ve been away for a few days.” She squeezed tighter. “It’s ok,” she said. “You must have been working on all of this somehow, this beautiful place. I’m so happy for this gift, Jack, and I have many questions.” We parted as I watched her eyes reflecting daylight pouring in. It made her ever more beautiful. Surprisingly enough, be...
